Question by 4-GiVeN: Best doggy potty training advice for the stubborn dog??
I have a minature weeni-dog, and she is so stubborn! I will take her out to use the bathroom for 30 min, and she will come back in and still use the bathroom in the floor! My husband is getting pretty sick of it, and if I can’t figure out something, he will want me to find her a new home, and I just can’t do it, so please someone help!!

Crate train her. The attached website has good info on how to do it. Then, when she is out of the crate, tie her to you with a leash so she is with you all the time. First sign of potty – outside fast!

Make sure you stay with her until she has peed atleast twice and pooped once. Even if you have to wait forever…she can’t hold it forever. Also take her out frequently. Also the area she is going on has her scent and she will always go their. If it is carpet you’ll have to rip it up…
Well, when I got my puppie I started using those doggie pads that are scented and used them in the garage. He used them for about 2 months in addition to my regularly taking him outside to go. When he got to the point where he was only using the pads occasionally, I moved him into the house and used a crate at night and he held it until I took him out in the morning. I only had to do that three nights and he hasn’t done anything in the house since. I think they are a little like kids – when they are ready they will be housetrained.
Keep her on a leash tied to you all the time. Watch her like a hawk and catch her as she’s going. As soon as she squats, yell “NO” and run her outside. Praise her for going outside.
Potty time is not play time.
When you take her out, stand in one spot, cross your arms over your chest, and ignore everything but bathrooming. Pick a command for potty and repeat it over and over. I use “get busy”. As soon as she goes, praise her. Say, “good (use the dog’s name), good get busy”. (or whatever command you like)
Immediately go back into the house. NO PLAYING!
If you want to play, wait a few minutes and go back out. As you leave the house, say, “go play”.
Eventually the she’ll go on command and you won’t have to guess or wait forever for her to finish.
By using “go play” you are distinguishing it from potty time.
Crate training! It works wonders. Its known that a dog won’t potty where they sleep. Since she is so small you will want to get the smallest crate, only giving her room to sleep or turn around in. If she is horribley stubborn, leave her in the crate at all times except to go potty making sure you take her for a min of 2 walks a day. Also if she’s going to the bathroom on carpet she probably has her smell there, was it with 1/2 water and 1/2 viniger. You may need to treat multiply times. Viniger is stinky but dog potty is worse. Another thing, when you take her out to go potty use a code word like Well….potty. With our puppy, with take him out site and say “go potty”. Also don’t walk her around. take her out and stand in one place until she gots potty. Max 15 min. if she doesn’t go put her back in the crate. Good Luck! hope all that helps.
what are you cleaning the urine in the house with? you need special pet odor removers not just some floor cleaner. she can probably smell her urine on the floor still and that makes her want to go there again. also since she is a small breed make sure you dont give her too much water, she has a TINY bladder. this will be tough at 1st but taker her out every hour no matter what you are doing and dont let her inside until she frelieves herself. small pieces of treats and praise will go a long way aswell… it seems like there is no end in sigh but she WILL get it
The best advice i can give you is go to a book store and read up on potty training ,and stick to training some dogs learn right away dont quit on her she will pick it up one advice try crateing her at night pick up water and food get up early and take her out i taught a puppy this way in three days it worked good luck ………YOKATEE
Clean up all the places she’s soiled so she can’t smell it. You might not smell it, but her nose works better than yours. An easy and cheap clean up is 1/4 cup white vinegar in a half pail of water..and it does work. Then get a crate and use it every time you can’t watch her like a hawk…like a toddler in a room with ming vases. Do Not allow her freedom to roam, she should be confined in a room where you can watch her at all times and when you can’t, crate her. You have to be fair though, you can’t crate her all the time and to be honest, the more confined freedom where you can catch her in the act goes a long way in getting the job done. When you do catch her a loud NO and then pick her up and take her outdoors. You have to go with her every time. Dogs easily get distracted outside..birds, squirrels, kids playing are all distractions. When they come in and the distraction is gone they suddenly remember they have to go. So you have to go with them every time.
And now here is the thing you have to keep in mind. She’s NOT being stubborn. She just hasn’r quite gotten it yet. They key to getting this all important job done is you, not the dog. The more consistant, the more you catch her in the act, the faster it’s over and you can forget it. And a common mistake to avoid is to rush potty training. Don’t consider her reliable at all until she’s gone one whole month accident free and don’t let up until she is. Don’t allow yourself to lose your temper, it only slows things up. A loudly spoken NO does the trick, and don’t forget to praise like crazy every time she goes in the proper place.
